Day 3 Continued... The rest of the day

After leaving the Golden Driller, we hit the road. We quickly realized with our stops that there was no way we would make it to New Mexico. Oklahoma is a long way across!  I called and canceled our reservation that we had in New Mexico and started the search for another spot to stop. We settled on Amarillo, TX which would also be the destination of our next fun excursion. Little did we know how long the day would be. We didn't want to arrive after dark again but needed somewhere to stay where we could get a shower and have dinner etc. I found availability at a place called overnite RV park in Amarillo, TX.  I also called to see if there had been any cancellations at the RV park we were staying at the next day in Colorado. We lucked our because there was a cancellation and we were able to extend our stay for a second night. We were really excited because we were ready to stay somewhere longer than just a night. Driving through Oklahoma was STRESSFUL. The wind was INSANE! They had wind advisories because of the wind being up to 45 mph. Brad at one point asked me for paper towels so that he could wipe the sweat off the steering wheel. It took so much for him to be able to control the RV with the big gusts of wind. It also didn't help with big 18-wheelers coming past us. They cause a draft as they are approaching and it pulls the RV. I took a video of just brads arms and hands on the steering wheel just to show how much it took for him to keep it steady. I was not able to help with the driving due to the wind. I would have been terrified. The wind was also causing the passenger side mirror to constantly shift to where Brad couldn't see anything. We kept adjusting it, but it wouldn't stay. By the time we arrived Brads arms were killing him from being so tense. We drove 521 miles to get to Amarillo, TX. Our favorite road sign so far was in Oklahoma- It said: Warning:  Hitch hikers may be escaped inmates.  We did get some pictures along the way though.

This was just a pretty church that we passed by and I thought I would snap a picture.
Benjamin has had no problem taking in some good naps on this trip.
Eden also has fallen asleep quite a few times. I will say traveling long distance like this is the way to go.
The wind turbines are EVERYWHERE and really quite amazing to see. No wonder they have so many because the wind was non-stop.

The landscape is very flat and lots and lots of fields in Oklahoma. There was also a constant haze on the horizon. I guess from all the wind causing dust.
This was one area we saw a little change in scenery and there were some hills.
You can see the haze in the distance in these next few pictures.

Last family picture in Oklahoma- up next Texas!
Welcome to Texas!
Caleb never takes naps, but he has fallen asleep a few times along the way.
Between the haze in the sky and our dirty windshield pictures have a lot of bug splatters in them. This cross was something we could see way off in the distance and as we got closer it was really huge.

This campground was literally right off the interstate and across but also beside two big truck stops. It was a quiet little place. It had an old playground that the kids played at and had showers and bathrooms that were not gross. We pulled in before dark which made things so much easier. Brad got things set up for the RV and I immediately started dinner. We had Ravioli with sauce, honeydew melon, salad, and pickled cucumbers with red onion. It was fast and easy.
This was our ending mileage today.
We ate dinner at the picnic table at our site. It was nice to sit down outside and just eat before we all got ready for bed and crashed.

Day 3 ended well, it was a very long day, we were so glad to be out of the wind and able to rest and take showers.
